Recognizing Academic Excellence Among First-Generation College Students

About

The mission of the Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) Honor Society at Utah Tech University is to recognize and support academic excellence among first-generation college students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. This chapter is dedicated to fostering scholarly achievement and providing opportunities for leadership, personal development, and community involvement. Membership in Tri-Alpha is a lifelong distinction, awarded based on outstanding academic performance.

Faculty, staff, and alumni may also be inducted if they have earned a bachelor’s degree, were first-generation college students at the time of graduation, and remain connected to Utah Tech University as faculty or staff members.

Qualifications for Tri-Alpha

Undergraduate Students

  • Be a first-generation college student
  • Earned at least 30 credit hours
  • Have an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.2

Graduate Students

  • Graduate students who are first-generation students can be admitted if they have completed the equivalent of at least one term of study (9 or more graduate credits)
  • Have a GPA in their graduate program of at least 3.5

Membership Benefits

  • Membership is for life
  • Build a community with fellow first gen students, staff/faculty, and alumni
  • Receive a special Tri-Alpha cord at graduation
  • Collectively promote academic excellence

Can I still be apart of Tri-Alpha even if I don't make the requirements

Yes! While official induction into Tri-Alpha is earned through academic excellence, all students—regardless of induction status—can participate in programming, leadership, and professional development opportunities.
